Resumo

On a world basis, new standards for structures of different materials such as steel, aluminum, concrete, wood, masonry and glass, and of different types such as buildings, bridges, towers, off-shore structures and silos are now being written using LIMIT STATES DESIGN (LRFD). The two broad categories of limit states are serviceabillity limit states and ultimate limit states. For servicealility limit states the question asks: "How does the structure perform from day to day?" Are the vibrations, deflections, slip in connections and the rate of crack propagation, all due loads that act on the structure at relatively frequent intervals within acceptable limits?
