Abstract

The paper focuses on the development of appropriate low-cost house-building technologies such as a deck roof system which uses conventional components assembled in an innovative way, and a hand compacted cast-in-situ wall made with a travelling steel mould. Both the roof and wall building techniques were designed to be carried out with a minimum of technical supervision. The basic principles of both systems were tested in a room-sized structure, erected on the National Building Research Institute (NBRI) test site. Both building techniques were developed in 1984185 by the NBRI for an experimental core and shell housing project sponsored by the Municipality of Pietermaritzburg, Natal. The emphasis of the paper is on technical details such as the shape, dimensions, assembly, moulding and casting of the components. A brief description of the thermal performance of the experimental structure is also presented
