Abstract

The overall objective of the proposed work is to develop a modal testing and analysis technique, based on the impulse excitation method, such that the approach can be successfully and cost effectively deployed in the integrity assessment of masonry structures. There are a significant number of these structures requiring urgent assessment and repair. Large cost savings could be made by improving assessment and analysis techniques. This paper describes the application of the impulse excitation method to the assessment of structural brickwork columns. Four columns were tested with different combinations of brick and mortar strength being used in each. A controlled defects were introduced and their effect upon the column behaviour analysed. Dynamic finite element analyses were used to model the behaviour of the columns under impulse loading. Prediction of the column´s dynamic response was achieved with accepable accuracy.
