Abstract

Compaction water content is a key variable which controls fundamental properties of a compacted soil (permeability, deformability, volumetric stability upon subsequent water content changes). Three compaction conditions have been considered for a reference soil: wet, optimum and dry of optimum. In order to provide consistent mechanical properties to these conditions, a common elastoplastic model with a given set of parameters, typical of a clayey sand, has been used. The analysis of the construction stage shows the effect of rate of construction on pore water pressures generated in the core. Mechanical interaction between core and shells, as a result of water filtration through the dam, has also been analyzed for two cases: wide core and upstream inclined core.
