Abstract

This paper refers to the state-of-the-art of sprayed concrete in Australia. Within the last two decades with a boom in construction in most Australian cities, Shotcrete has been used increasingly in order to expedite construction in different types of applications such as new constructions and repairs of existing concrete structures. Australia has an expertise in manufacturing steel fibres suitable for shotcrete applications for over 25 years, from the time these fibres were introduced in concrete to improve ductility and toughness. Nowadays, polypropylene, glass and carbon fibres have also been investigated for their use as fibres in shotcrete material. In this paper the new materials used for shotcrete applications in Australia, including advanced fibre reinforced and high-performance concrete are discussed. Innovative methods on placing of concrete and special mixes used are also included. The current research on the behaviour of shotcrete materials, trends and future research needs are also identified.
