Abstract

Due to the significant rate of fatal accident events in the Brasilian systems of production, it was decided to research on the causes that lead to them, as well as the perception of the population exposed to the risks in terms of the factors that may help minimize the human losses at companies. To a better study and evaluation of the involved variables, the research has focused the electrical business area, seeing that this is widely known for its high level of risk, and CHESF - Companhia Hidro Elétrica do São Francisco has been chosen, this company working in the Northeastern Region of Brazil; a sample of workers settled in risky areas, distributed operational, maintenance, managing and other levels. A qualitative approach has been adopted, and the collective instruments used were: fatal accident statistic documents, interviews and questionnaires. Based on the theoretical basis and in the own expression of the researched workers, it was observed that it is possible to reduce the number of fatal accidents at work by: improving the specific and advanced techniques of risk management suitable to each level; promoting better understanding of the "work organization" (work sharing, task content, hierarchy, ways of commanding, relations of power and responsibility matters); stimulating praising, assessment and awareness of the workers, redeeming motivation and self-esteem, turning these professionals into the main characters of their own history - not just a mere object - in promoting the life quality at work.
