Abstract

In the last twenty years in many countries the growing necessity to safeguard the environment has led to the introduction of specific laws, aimed to reduce the number of landfill sites and the volume of waste to be disposed of, improving the practice of recycling. In Italy about 97 million tons of waste materials are produced each year. Of this 36% is due to construction and demolition sector. This figure underlines the great impact that the construction industry has on the environment and consequently the necessity of keeping the construction activity under control. Although in many cases recycled materials have shown characteristics comparable to new materials, at the moment their use is hindered by the rules, which generally do not contemplate the utilization of this kind of resources. The intention of the present work is to review the regulations and initiatives, relating to recycling in Europe, and to check the possibility and the convenience of recycling waste building materials in Italy.
