Abstract

Work carried out as part of two projects that deal with the promotion and dissemination of energy efficiency information in higher education teaching is described. Since buildings and their energy consumption have such a significant environmental impact, construction industry courses form the focus of the work. The first project investigated the energy and environment syllabus for a range of courses as part of a strategic approach. Barriers to progress and subsequent needs were identified. As a result, the second project is particularly targeted at teaching staff in higher education involved in providing construction industry courses. Teaching staff knowledge and attitude, particularly that of non-specialists, is a key issue for the exploitation of energy efficient and environmentally sensitive design and construction techniques. A series of workshops are being held and in addition the Internet is being utilised to enable dissemination activities. Some suggestions for action to aid the ‘greening’ of the construction curriculum are described.
