Abstract

The techniques of solar heating/cooling are well rehearsed. The uptake of the techniques still remains outside the mainstream of the construction industry. The usual reason given for this is cost. Behavioural changes need not have any cost, and might lead to increased sustainability. This paper argues that the reason for the reluctance to embrace such alternative behaviour is that embracing alternatives means embracing alternative attitudes to resources and the consumption of resources. This is a threat to the status quo in society. The results are presented of some attempts by Architecture students to increase sustainability by changes in personal behaviour, and the effect such changes might have on the global impact of New Zealand.
