Abstract

This paper arises from a sense of apprehension about current mass middle class housing especially in the tropics. Concern comes from the scale of the projects and the huge numbers of units that seem so banal and ecologically insensitive. In stark contrast the aims of tropical modern architecture fifty years ago gained credibility because they proclaimed sensitivity to regional contexts. Tropical modern architecture can be understood as a fusion of science (coming from Building Stations’ research) and modernism typified by Brazil’s new architecture of the 1940s. In an attempt to provoke debate the paper looks for clues about how to promote sustainability in housing by reviewing the beginnings of tropical modern architecture. This paper’s sequence of Papua New Guinea houses provide an uncanny encapsulation of the rise and fall of this regionalism: from a time when science was used in the successful promotion of a potentially sustainable new architecture.
