Abstract

The Australian Conservation Foundation, together with the University of Melbourne and Lincolne Scott Australia investigates possibilities for development of an exemplary "green" headquarters building. One of the first steps was an architectural brief, a document aimed to establish communication between the client and designers, to set a context of ideas for an appropriate approach to design, construction, use and maintenance of the building. The list of issues was long: long-lasting, recyclable materials; local, healthy materials; bioclimatic principles; natural lighting and ventilation; renewable energy and materials; local crafts and traditions, even (why not?) - geomantic procedures. Good brief has also to give hints on architectural expression. The issues of form and spatial expression in architecture deeply penetrate the realm of values, which is central to environmental debate. In this case questions got much wider relevance: How does the 'green' look in architecture? Does ‘green’ imply specific organisation of space?
