Abstract

This paper considers the multifaceted role of spatial layering in the creation of buildings and urban environments which are environmentally and culturally sustainable and personally and socially sustaining. It is in three sections : A discussion of why and how the nature of the layering of urban spaces and building form and detail in degrees of enclosure between inside and outside is fundamental to the creation of environmentally sustainable buildings and personally and socially sustaining situations. It is shown how this layering is manifested in types of situation; A discussion of the mechanisms of change and continuity in the creation of environments which may be culturally sustainable and sustaining with the consequent rediscovery and transformation of types of situation and form; A review of some examples from contemporary urban design and architecture where traditional patterns, types and situations of layering have been rediscovered and reworked.
