Abstract

During the use phase of a building huge amounts of energy, raw materials and products are consumed, while wastes and emissions are produced. In the last years great efforts have been made in order to diminish those consumes and emissions, using new materials during the construction phase, e.g. using double instead of simple glazing, adding insulation on the external walls, installing PV panels and solar collectors, etc. In this way, besides diminishing the consumption during the use of the buildings, an increase in the environmental impact due to the construction of the building is obtained. In order to assess in a complete way the real energetic and environmental benefits that can be obtained through the use of a given technology, a method that takes into account the whole life of the system must be used. In this work different solar passive technologies utilized in school buildings in arid Andean regions in Mendoza (Argentina) have been analyzed following this procedure.
