Abstract

The paper presents an experimental investigation on bond between high-performance concrete (HPC) and reinforcing bars. The influence of chemical admixtures on bond is studied in two types of tests, pull-out and splice tests. The pull-out test included eighteen specimens in two series with different concrete mixtures. The first series was made with regular concrete and the second series included concrete containing chemical admixtures and silica fume. The splice test comprised six beam specimens made with two different concrete mixtures. One of the mixtures contained higher amounts of chemical admixtures to increase the strength of the concrete. Test results showed that the addition of chemical admixtures in the concrete mixture decreased the bond strength when compared to the bond strength of a regular concrete with the same strength. It is concluded that the reinforcing steel-concrete bond may not increase with concrete strength if the concrete strength is increased using a high amount of chemical admixtures in the HPC mixture.
