Abstract

To achieve a high-performance concrete masonry unit it is essential that the appropriate grout to the best masonry wall behaviour be used. The grout - masonry unit compatibility is achieved when the material properties are similar. In this case the wall performance can be optimized. The study takes into account the need of self-compacting grout properties, high compression strength and the unit/grout bond strength. The results show that the concrete block porous media is responsible to the grout water-cement ratio reduction that improved a more important shrinkage when the block voids ratio increases. The compressive strength and grout bond strength have opposite effects, and they are very dependent of the aggregate specific surface area. An optimal situation can be reached with an adequation of the aggregate specific surface area that depends of the block droscopicity. An experimental model, based on the aggregate specific surface area and the grout water-cement ratio, was developed to predict the grout bond strength. The main key, in this paper, is that the block - grout bond strength, together with the compressive strength, is employed to determine a high-performance grout.
