Abstract

The aim of this paper is to describe the practical and pedagogic implications that arise in devising a virtual gallery as a device to enable the display and sharing of information in an architectural setting. The first stages of the establishment of a new web-based environment are described and involves a review of some of the existing environments that might be appropriate for such a gallery. As such the paper represents a state of the art review of internet accessible sites for the display and review of exhibition, education and research material. Initially the key role of the gallery would be to display student work from all of the member states of eCAADe. With this feature established we might then want to move on to providing additional elements within the gallery which could allow exchange of views; discussion; points of contact; and the provision of educational and research information relating to CAAD. This would possibly entail the uniting of access to existing eCAADe facilities such as CUMINCAD within a new, common, site. The first step would be to establish a student work gallery. But the features that were to follow might dictate the nature of that gallery and its adjuncts. The paper will describe the evolution, potential and limits of the different kinds of gallery that might be appropriate. The range of types reviewed will cover conventional “flat” sites using conventional hypertext navigation, to sites which offer a collaborative environment represented in a three dimensional form. In particular those offered by Blaxxun, Holodesk and Active Worlds are taken as the test environments. Our review of the recent trends and current potential will be followed by a description of the extension of the idea to include a group of meeting places where views on matters of architecture and architectural education can be exchanged in the same world as the eCAADe gallery (see Figure 2). This work is part of an ongoing evolutionary programme.
