Abstract

This work is based upon the result of research on housing construction pathology and housing production in informal settlement held in Venezuela over the last 15 years. Some of these research works are related to income generating processes as important changes in social organisation and life conditions. The purpose of this research is to improve the housing construction quality and to find the best way to generate incomes through an action-research process, for which a social consortium is being conformed by inhabitants, technical assistants and other associates in order to consider not only the physical infrastructure aspects but also the human and social development of this kind of settlement. This consortium is actually being held in "Barrio Simón Bolívar", by Civil Association Fe y Alegría, with the university support through the Housing Community School. The objectives have been oriented in two directions: to improve informal settlement housing constructions once identified the main failures; and, to train a group of inhabitants as community constructors to improve life conditions through income generating processes. The results of this work are presented in four groups according to the characteristics of the constructions failures. A special consideration is given to the social consortiums and the Housing Community School as an example of promoting community development and income generating associated organizations.
