Abstract

The present study was developed with the aim of using ash (waste) resultant from the burning of rice husk used as fuel in a pottery in the city of Bagé - RS. The pottery produces ceramic blocks from a mixture of hill clay (well-drained and yellow-colored) with lowland clay (darker colored, typical from areas of reduced atmosphere). The study consisted of the mixture of both clays, the addition of rice husk ash to the mixture, and further characterization measurements which included the following tests: granulometric tests, liquid and plastic limits, contraction and water absorption in molded specimens with extrusion burned at several temperatures, proportion of the different clays and the rice husk ash, as well as the burning temperatures. In addition to an improved performance of the material as indicated by the tests, samples of the first blocks produced at the pottery showed satisfactory results.
