Abstract

This paper presents the recent development on the use of vegetable plants in engineering at Pontificia Universidade Catolica, Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), with special emphasis on sisal and coconut fibres as reinforcement of brittle matrix and bamboo technology. Applications are focused on structural engineering aspects including the experimental analysis of soil vegetable fibre composite and fracture behaviour of cement mortar matrix reinforced with sisal fibres. In addition to the study of the microstructure of bamboo as a functionally gradient material, which led to the establishment of its composite behaviour through the rule of mix. Application of bamboo in the production of double layer space structure, permanent shutter concrete slab and cylindrical concrete column reinforced with the strip of bamboo are summarised and discussed. Finally some recommendations for future studies are proposed.
