Abstract

In this paper, a quick-scan for the environmental impact assessment of urban areas is described and discussed. The quick-scan is the basis for an environmental impact assessment method for urban areas that takes into account the environmental impact of that area during its entire lifecycle. With the quick-scan and the assessment method, a designer or decision maker will be able to choose the most sustainable design alternative. The existing situation in the area will serve as the background against which comparisons can be made. Design alternatives and the existing situation are modelled with so called indicators. For the environmental impact assessment method, indicators have to be developed for several sustainability aspects, such as multiple use of space, liveability, pollution, damage to ecosystems etc. For this developing process, lifecycle analysis (LCA) and environmental impact assessment (EIA) are leading examples.
