Abstract

Nowadays waste generation is increasing fast. As a consequence, proper disposal sites near waste generation centres is becoming very difficult. Furthermore, the shortage of natural aggregates sources is a problem as well. Then, recycling process can be a good way to minimize some of these difficulties. This paper deals with recycling of construction and demolition waste to produce aggregates used in concrete. Some concrete properties evaluation were made to improve the knowledge in recycling of aggregates. At this work, compression strength, modulus of elasticity and absorption rate were measured in concrete specimen with different substitution contents from natural aggregates to recycled aggregates. Recycled concrete showed a good behaviour in comparison to the reference one. Modulus of elasticity of recycled concrete was equal or just a slightly worse than conventional concrete, and the absorption rate of recycled concrete was worse than conventional concrete. On the other hand capillary resistance of concrete with recycled aggregate performs better. It was found that recycled aggregate has some influence on concrete properties at different levels in each concrete property studied.
