Abstract

Heliodyne Incorporated has developed a coil-in-shell heat exchanger specifically for solar thermal systems with a pumped collector loop and a thermosyphoning loop on the storage side. The coils are arranged in such a way to produce the beneficial effects of turbulence at the low flow rates seen in the natural convection loop. The unit was combined with the standard components of a solar domestic water heating system for testing to measure its performance, which is discussed in this paper. The production of this heat exchanger makes it now possible to achieve energy output similar to that of the dual pumped configurations, while maintaining the benefits of natural tank layering, reducing parasitic pump loads and enabling larger collector arrays. With this greater output, higher system costs are more readily justified on the return of investment time.
