Abstract

During the 1990’s, the solar water heating market in Brazil grew at a fast pace, with sales of solar collectors rising from 36,000 m2 in 1990 to 260,000 m2 in 2000. Then, in 2001, the market was propelled by an electricity crisis in the country to reach sales of 480.000 m2. The situation was exacerbated by record high prices for residential electricity and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). This rapid increase in sales brought new challenges to the marketplace, such as training of new sales personnel, installers and building professionals. As a response to these training needs, an education and awareness program was developed through a partnership between Soletrol, a local solar water heater manufacturer, and PROCOBRE, the Brazilian branch of the International Copper Institute (ICA). The main product of this initiative, called PROSOLAR, was the development of two separate TV series: Minuto do Sol (“Minute of the Sun”) and Energia Solar na TV (“Solar Energy on TV”). The present paper details the project’s development including the contents of both TV series and the Internet web sites created to support them.
