Abstract

This paper seeks to demonstrate how advanced polymer matrix composite materials developed for high-performance aircraft can offer major advantages for civil structures. It focuses on the development and applications of strengthening and field monitoring technologies for bridges based on combinations of corrosion-resistant fiber-reinforced polymers and integrated fiber optic structural sensing. Since 1986, FRP laminates have been used to post-strengthen bridges (Rostasy 1992, Meier 1993). The method now represents the state-of-the-art and is a commercial success. Although cables made from advanced composite materials (Head 1992, Meier 1992) has so far failed to achieve an economic breakthrough, several new cable-stayed and suspension bridges in Europe have made use of FRP cables, some even incorporating optical fiber sensors.
