Abstract

This project, developed for an architectural competition which demanded a social housing project of 20 dwellings, is framed within the environmental strategies of the Junta de Extremadura (Government of the region of Extremadura, located in western Spain). This housing project is directed to low income persons. The project had to comply with building regulations as well as local construction prices. This work intends to prove, on the one hand, the difficulty created by urban planning and building regulations to develop the rational use of renewable energies. Normally, those regulations do not contemplate any of these energy issues. On the other hand, it shows the need to involve public administrations in the development of this type of dwelling inside the residential planning of the town. All the different aspects of the competition winner project are explained in detail, not only in regards to energy matters but to architectural matters, as well as the conclusions to which the authors of this project came to. Besides, there are included the principles on renovable resources of the region defended by the Regional Administration.
