Abstract

The influence of culture on design has been historically strong and in contemporary architecture can still be significant. This cultural influence, and its interaction with climatic factors, would need to be recognised for any passive low energy architecture to be successful. However, cultural influences in contemporary architecture are much less well researched and understood and are at risk of being overlooked or ignored in both design practice and the researching and development of design guidelines. Cultural influences are explored, in this paper, principally in the context of lighting design, with particular emphasis on the concept of lighting quality. The implications of cultural factors in the achievement of low energy, sustainable architecture are discussed. The need to embed cultural and regional preferences into mathematical simulation models of buildings’ environmental performance and into algorithms for automatic control systems is considered.
