Abstract

This paper presents the results of the experimental performance of a Passive Cooling System (PCS) named “SECORA” (Sistema de Enfriamiento COnvectivo RAdiante) under the hot and humid climatic conditions of the city of Maracaibo, on the northwest region of Venezuela. The PCS is based on the cooling potential of the nocturnal air when it comes in contact with a light galvanized sheet, which is exposed to the night sky. Three operating conditions of the system have been studied and the results have been compared with the thermal behavior of the traditional building system in the region. An experimental platform constituted of two test cells (reference and experimental), a meteorological station and an automated data acquisition system have permitted to assess the thermal behavior of the system in real time and to register it for subsequent analysis. The results show that the internal conditions of dwellings with lightweight metallic roofs can be improved in a simple and economic way.
