Abstract

A model house for environment-friendly houses was built in a southern city of China. This house was designed based on the local climate and local building materials, aiming at establishing a viable technology of passive cooling for the development of energysaving and environmentally friendly dwelling construction in the southern regions of China. The solar system used in the house can heat and cool and ventilate the building, produce hot water and generate electricity. Because the location of the house is in a hot and humid climate as well as lack of wind, the methods were proposed to ventilate the rooms during the summer day. A passive ventilating wall for heat insulation was designed. Local materials which absorb water are used for finishing as possible. For instance, brick is one of the most popular building materials in the location, so the outside walls and floor surfaces are finished with brick tiles. This paper describes the passive techniques and the solar system used in the house. The monitored results of thermal performance of the house are also given.
