Abstract

The 28 climatic data sets currently supplied with the building energy rating programs NatHERS and BERS have been selected using a method which can produce “typical” climatic data which is at odds with long term monthly means. Using these data sets can produce errors when calculating the average heating and cooling requirements of buildings. More representative “typical” years of climatic data have been constructed by concatenating months of data selected from individual years. Real radiation data has been selected wherever it was available in preference to estimated values. As well as simulating building performance in typical conditions it is also important to investigate what happens to a building during periods of climatic extremes. These periods of extremes have been identified for each complete year of climatic data available from ACADS.
