Abstract

Settlement patterns and architecture of Australian deserts are predominantly of imported typology, more or less successfully adjusted to the harsh local conditions. The accommodation is usually developed at the level of architectural party and details. Macrotypologically the built environment of vast hot and dry regions of the continent repeats the common themes of Australian colonial architecture and urbanism. This paper is based on research into bioclimatic urban and architectural typologies of Australian deserts. Some critical cultural aspects are offered for discussion.
