Abstract

Bridges and high rise structures are particularly sensitive to long term movements which create visual deterioration and structural damage. The use of high performance concrete and innovative structural systems that can control cracking and impart ductility and energy absorption properties to the structure as a whole can lead to cost-effective construction with a high degree of service life. In this search for new materials, ecological issues cannot be overlooked. A synergic interaction between material properties and structural performance can, however, only be attained by an integrated, global design approach that combines material characteristics with structurally efficient systems.
