Abstract

Maturity method has been suggested to account for the combined effect of curing time and temperature. This method has been used successfully for safe early removal of formwork. It can also be used for early quality control by employing high curing temperatures, i.e. accelerated curing. In spite of being a useful tool, many researchers have indicated the limitations inherent in this method. It is suggested that these limitations are partly due to the effect of temperature on final strength and delayed time that had not been considered previously. The effect of temperature on the delayed time is studied here. Test results for four different cements at 7 different curing temperatures are reported. The initial setting time is analysed using principles of heterogeneous nucleation. Furthermore, an equation for prediction of temperature dependence of initial setting time is suggested, and its validity is evaluated using the available data.
