Abstract

Concretes made with lightweight aggregates are becoming topical again due to the construction of concrete offshore platforms and the building of bridges having large spans. Therefore, an attempt has been made to develop a rational mixture-proportioning method of lightweight structural concretes. After a description of the main properties of existing lightweight aggregates, a theoretical model describing the influence of lightweight gravel on the compressive strength of concrete is presented. This model, once validated, leads to the establishment of curves correlating various properties such as density, compressive strength, and elastic modulus, for a family of concretes formulated with the same constituents. A mixture-proportioning methodology using the conventional concepts of grading optimization, together with BETONMIX software for the prediction of compressive strengths, is then deduced. Finally, it is shown that the results of this approach are in agreement with those of the experimental study recently conducted on the occasion of the construction of the Elorn bridge, in Britanny (western France).
