Abstract

Cracking is one of the most serious problems affecting concrete structures such as dams, bridges, parking garages, etc. and grout injection has proven an efficient repair method. Since 1986, Hydro-Quebec has been carrying out a research project on the injectability of very fine cracks by cement-based grouts. This paper presents the results of these activities. In the first part of the study, different types of cement and different water-cement ratios with or without admixtures were tested at 4, 10 and 20°C. Influence of a large number of variables on the grouts' theological and physico-mechanical properties was assessed in a laboratory study. In the second part, selected products were injected in instrumented concrete slabs. Each slab (2.62 in x 1.42 in x 0.40 m) was horizontally fractured by water and then grouted. For a better simulation of the site conditions, all the experimental work was done in a climatic chamber at specific temperature and relative humidity levels. The slabs were placed in a metallic frame to limit the opening of the fissure to 0. 1 min and to give the desired inclination to the fissure. Instruments (displacement sensors, pressure sensors, loading cells, etc.) were used during the injection to monitor the grout penetration, displacements, the pressure distribution within the crack and the resulting force acting on the slab. After a 28-day curing period, microstructural and macrostructural studies were conducted to evaluate the quality and efficiency of the grouting products, equipment and procedures.
