Abstract

The stock pile of coal mining waste in the south state region of Santa Catarina, Brazil, amounts approximately 600 to 900 million tons. It is a quite acid material, widespread in a large area. In its natural state cannot be considered a suitable material from the point of view of civil engineering construction. This paper presents a preliminary study carried out in order to stabilize this waste material chemical and mechanically for civil engineering construction purpose, mainly for pavement base and/or bricks. Two ways have been tried, first, using other wastes, like, phosphogypsum and coal ash and second using lime. The results obtained so far are encouraging. The compaction effort applied for all samples was equivalent to the Modified Proctor Test. The measured strength varied from 2,1 MPa for coal mining waste/lime mixture to 18.0 MPa for phosphogypsuni/coal ash mixture.
