Abstract

Masonry in the unreinforced form possess limited ductility and hence considered not suitable for the earthquake regions. This paper reports an experimental investigation on the strength and deformation of reinforced masonry. Five beams were fabricated and tested. The beams were reinforced with either 1.15% or 1.88% longitudinal steel and varying shear stirrup spacing. The ductility of the beams was affected by the longitudinal reinforcement ratio. All well constructed beams failed initially in bottom fibre tension and finally in shear. One beam with poorly compacted grout, failed in compression. No adverse effect on the ultimate strength and ductility was noticed in this beam.
