Resumo

Complementing other lines of environment-behavior research that have influenced Brazilian researchers and practitioners, such as studies of urban cognition and post-occupancy evaluation, I will describe the development and application of research on human spatial behavior. This work owes much to European ethologists and zoologists such as Lorenz, Von Uexkull, and Tinbergen who studied space usage by animals in the wild and in captivity. Along with basic research on personal space, territory, crowding, and privacy, came applied studies intended to improve building design. The most significant application of territoriality has been the defensible space concept of Oscar Newman, which has been applied successfully in public housing, and led to a speciality in Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED).
