Abstract

The strengthening of reinforced concrete structures with externally bonded reinforcement has become very popular all over the world. Both steel plates and carbon fibre sheets can be used for strengthening in bending as well as in shear. By combining steel plates and CFRP laminates it is possible to use the specific properties and benefits of steel and CFRP. Steel plates are rather cheap and have good tensile and stiffness properties. They are most effective when used in bending to reduce or limit deflections and deformations. CFRP laminates are light and have high tensile strength. They are very appropriate to carry tensile loads in bending and in shear. CFRP laminates are very easy to apply as external stirrups. An even more cost effective way is the application of the laminates at only one side of the beam, as a strengthening method against shear forces. A test program was carried out to check the effectiveness of one sided shear strengthening laminates. Also the combination with external steel plates for strengthening in bending has been investigated. Test specimens were beams with effective span of 1.5 meter subjected to a four point bending test. On the basis of these tests, a former school building was strengthened with a hybrid teel/CFRP system to transform the building into a library.
