Abstract

This paper deals with one of many structural problems involving a Waste Water Treatment Station, built in Rio de Janeiro state. This kind of station is composed by different types of process tanks, designed according to the demographic waste water region's outflow. In the present article the main tank of the entire undertaking - called Biological Reactor - will be focused. Usually this structure is a huge retangular tank with big walls in height, being the core of the biological process. Depending on the structural model created by the engineer, the continuous joint between the walls and the bottom plate can bring some undesirable effects to the tank foundation, mainly if it is made by means of pile foundations. In the analysed case an unsuitable choice of piles distribution demanded a new conception design of the tank and upgrade services with increasing final costs.
