Resumo

Reinforced concrete is emblematic for the architectural heritage of the early 20th Century. Experiments with mixtures, additives, reinforcement patterns and structures today result in characteristic types of concrete distress. Present repair methods involve breaking out and replacing defective areas, or applying a fresh coat over damaged parts. New electro-chemical methods master certain types of distress without such destructive treatments, by simply doing less. Developed for concrete conservation in ordinary structures such as bridges, re-alkalisation and de-salination reverse the chemical processes that cause reinforcement corrosion. They also prove to be respectful of our architectural heritage. The paper evaluates practical experiences with some noted historic buildings in Europe. (Lecture illustrated with slides)
