Abstract

The Resource Efficient Building program sought to implement recommendations of previous desk-top studies into construction waste minimisation in order to address the need for meaningful information and guidance to builders on reducing construction and demolition waste. The work involved the production of an expandable paper-based, twelve issue set of information and case-studies which would highlight current approaches that contractors and building related organisations were taking to eliminate or reduce waste and provide much needed practical guidance on how to implement waste minimisation during the building process. Each issue profile a company and their strategy for reducing waste. The articles initially concentrated on the financial and time cost savings that are achieved. The first issue consisted of an introduction to the Resource Efficient Building Program (RSE) and explained its aims and objectives and explained how organisations could become involved. A general guide to recycling, salvaging and re-using construction materials was also be included to provide practical guidance from the outset and to encourage firms to keep the information that they receive.
