Abstract

The significant part of the dwellings in Istanbul hadn’t been built energy efficient to meet either regional or international standards for energy conservation, reduction in air pollutants and CO2 emission. A research project is set to develop applicable energy and economic efficient retrofitting systems for the exterior envelope of existing dwellings in Istanbul. The opaque components are retrofitted with additional thermal insulation materials while the transparent components are retrofitted with energy efficient glazing types in order to improve the thermal performance of the building. In the context of the study, the walls, cantilevered floors and roof of a typical building are taken into consideration in the retrofitting of the opaque components. The retrofitting systems with applicable insulation thickness’ of 3 cm to 15 cm with energy efficient glazing types are verified according to the heating energy consumption and pay back period of the alternatives. Finally, the energy and cost effectiveness of the retrofitting alternatives are investigated with respect to the heating energy consumption and long term economic benefit.
