Abstract

The paper describes the production of 165,000m³ of high-performance concrete (HPC) for the Hibernia offshore concrete platform which was built in Newfoundland, Canada and put in to service on the Grand Banks, offshore Newfoundland. The platform, designed to resist the impact of icebergs, is in a severe marine environment and is expected to have a service life for as long as 70-years.The concrete in the structure will undergo continual wetting and drying by seawater, seasonal freezing and thawing, abrasion from floating debris (principally ice), and be subjected to both operational and accidental loads. The concrete had a design strength of 69 MPa but produced concrete typically averaged 80 MPa.The majority of the concrete was pumped and placed by slipforming. Information on the materials used, mixture proportions, compressive strength results, and some other properties other than compressive strength are presented. These include creep and shrinkage, air-void parameters, water intrusion (permeability), and chlorideion permeability. The effect of including entrained-air in HPC is also discussed
