Abstract

Passive design was analysed as a promising strategy for sustainable housing design in developing countries, focussing on the climate of the central region of Chile. The main results were published as a manual that offers design assistance and recommendations for architects and building engineers. The main method to prepare the manual constituted parametric studies with a simulation program for a test cell and a model of a one family house with typical dimensions. These were realised with a specially prepared test reference year. New simple design tools permit to calculate basic thermal characteristics of a house, extending the application of international building codes. The characteristics of basic passive heating and cooling strategies were included based on special simulations. This permits a good estimation of the daily degree - hours of heat in summer and of cold in winter in a passive house with free-floating temperatures according to correlation formulae, which were elaborated with extensive thermal simulations and implemented in a spreadsheet. The manual includes a quantitative and qualitative thermal evaluation of the principal design aspects and systematic design recommendations with examples. The methodologies developed and adapted and the approach of design analysis are easily extendable to other climate zones.
