Abstract

This paper is part of a doctoral research about thermal comfort in new buildings inserted in a specific area of the Historical Centre of Old Havana in Cuba (warm-humid climate). This urban area has a very compact layout with blocks shaped by courtyards buildings. The geometrical form of new buildings and their courtyards is a key element to improve thermal comfort taking into account that plot orientation, urban layout and terrain properties are already given elements that cannot be changed. The study sets a comparative climatic analysis between two different building layouts for an existing empty plot in Old Havana. Several parameters were tested in each proposal for the ground and top floor. The simulation programme “DEROB LTH” was used to compare the indoor thermal conditions. The results show that due to the compactness of the context, the orientation and shading devices parameters have less effect on indoor thermal comfort than the shape of the building and the ventilation parameter.
