Abstract

This paper makes the case for full integration of the design process with the related technical aspects, as a prerequisite of generating architecture that is environmentally responsive, functionally efficient, and aesthetically pleasing. Currently, a building designer has better technical support that applies to the building’s structural performance than that applies to its responsiveness to local climatic conditions or environmental principles. The currently available structural data creates a complete layer of information that is usable through all phases of the architectural design process. On the contrary, environmental science does not provide the necessary data to assist the designer in all phases of project development, especially in early design phases. An analogy to structural performance, along with a thorough survey of existing bioclimatic design assisting tools suggest that: in order to fully incorporate the environmental responsiveness into the architectural design process, filling the gap in the currently available environmental data and supporting tools is a necessity.
