Abstract

The demand for a responsible form of architecture which would favorably respond to better environmental conditions and would involve a lower energy consumption, gave rise to the emergence of ecological roofs in the construction market as a feature with a very promising future, mainly in the central and northern European countries. Vegetation protects the roof from direct solar radiation and enhances its thermal behavior. This paper presents the comparison between heat flows through flat roofs with and without vegetation, aiming to understand their thermal behavior, which consequently influence the indoor comfort conditions. By means of the simulation software Antesol-06, developed by Manuel Martín Monroy, the heat flows were estimated by a dynamic method, for summer and winter conditions, and compared with the real behavior, for five flat roof systems: ecological roof with thermal insulation and water tank; ecological roof with thermal insulation; ecological roof without thermal insulation; flat roof with thermal insulation and flat roof without thermal insulation.
