Abstract

To compete successfully with concrete and steel, weather exposed wooden constructions must be built for a service life of 25-50 years and more. The failures are usually caused by decay of essential parts of the carrying system. Chemical wood preservation does prevent decay, but is being increasingly criticized for environmental reasons. To keep wood as a viable alternative to concrete and steel, it was necessary to think of other ways of preserving wood: One excellent way is to by providing timely maintenance. As wood reacts quickly to adverse influences, short maintenance intervals of not more than 3-5 years are recommended to keep repairs, if needed, easy and economical. By following old and proven design principles and providing maintenance at an early time, the service fife of exposed wooden structures can be made comparable to other building materials.
