Abstract

This paper deals with a pile supported industrial flooring system using steel fibre concrete in combination with additional reinforcement in the column strips or unbonded prestressing tendons. Large scale tests on three different slab systems were carried out to investigate the performance under service and ultimate loading conditions as well as under cyclic loads. Major fields of application of this system are industrial floors on severe underground conditions, environmental protection constructions such as filling stations and storage areas for the chemical industry. Taking the benefits of prestressing into account, i.e. reduce of cracking due to restraint forces, in order to reduce construction joints, in many cases the combination with steel fibre concrete allows an economical design. The first applications using the new patented SFRC/RC system were concreted in the Netherlands and Belgium in early 1998. This year a total volume of at least 200,000 m2 should be carried out all over Europe, gaining a marked share of nearly 10% in the first year.
