Abstract

This article presents a comparison of the results obtained with two different life-cycle cost analysis methods to evaluate the economic viability of five passive solar heating strategies (Direct Gain, Trombé-Wall, Water-Wall, Sunspace, and Roofpond) in Muncie, Indiana. This study uses the actual construction costs (per sq. ft. of floor area) along with experimentally measured heatingenergy requirements (per sq. ft. of floor area per Heating Degree Day) to derive the payback period of each of the studied strategies when compared against a reference building. The results discussed in this article were derived from measured indoor operative temperatures, outdoor weather data, the utility costs for the city of Muncie, and the overall heat transfer coefficient of each of the test rooms (Fernández-González 2003, 2004).
